9th Annual Canadian Book Challenge

Challenge Summary: 1. What is the Canadian Book Challenge? The Canadian Book Challenge is an online reading challenge in which participants from Canada and around the world aim to read and review 13 or more Canadian books in a one year span: Canada Day to Canada Day. Reviews must be posted online and participants are asked to share links to their reviews with other participants. More on reviews below.

2. How do I join? Send John an email (jmutford (at) hotmail [dot] com) with the subject line "Sign Me Up!" and He'll add you to the list. Consider yourself a participant even if you don't get a response from me right away. Come July 1st you can get started right away. As soon as John gets your first link (see below), He'll add your name to the participant list on the sidebar of this blog.  Follow the link below to the challenge page for more details.

Read 20 Books by Award Winners (The Award Lover Canadian Challenge) (18 Books to go)

2015 Chunkster Reading Challenge

Challenge Summary:
Welcome to the 2015 Chunkster Challenge! I’m your host, Vasilly.
Wondering what’s a chunkster? A chunkster is an adult or YA book, non-fiction or fiction, that’s 450 pages or more.
Here’s the rules for this year’s challenge:
  1. Audio books and e-books are allowed. You want to listen to a chunkster on audio? Be my guest.
  2. Essay, short story, and poetry collections are allowed but they have to be read in their entirety to count.
  3.  Books may crossover with other challenges.
  4. Anyone can join. You don’t need a blog. Feel free to leave your progress on the monthly link-up posts.
  5.  You don’t have to list your books ahead of time.
  6.  Graphic novels don’t count. Reading a chunkster graphic novel isn’t the same as reading a non-graphic chunkster.

  7. Just like last year, there won’t be any levels with this challenge. How you challenge yourself is up to you. Read 1 book for this challenge or 20. It’s all up to you.

I understand that chunksters can be a bit intimidating. My goal is to encourage as many people as possible to give chunksters a try. We all love short books because we can get through them in a sitting or a few days. It’s different with chunksters. With chunksters, you have to slow down and take your time. The Chunkster Challenge is all about having fun and reading good books.

All I ask is th. 2015at participants either write a post or leave a comment in the comments section letting the world know that you’re participating. You can also link directly to your post about this challenge below in Mr. Linky.
I’ll be right here to cheer you on. Happy reading.

2015 Ultimate Canadian Reading Challenge

Challenge Summary:

The Traveling Canadian Challenge
Read a book by an author from each province and the territories. For an added bonus, read a book by both a male and a female author from each province and territory. (13-26 Books)

The Local Lover Canadian Challenge
Read at least twenty books by local authors. This could be local as in your city, or as in your province. Books can be previously published, or new releases in 2015. (20 Books)

The Award-Loving Canadian Challenge
Read at least twenty books from either the long- or short-list of various Canadian book awards. This could include the Scotiabank Giller Awards, the Booker Prize, the Governer General’s Award, Stephen Leacock Award, TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, etc. Find a full list with links HERE. (20 Books)

The Genre-Loving Canadian Challenge
Pick a genre, any genre! Actually, pick four of them. Then read five books from each genre you picked! That can be contemporary, mystery, classics, etc. You could even do YA or Graphic novels, if you like. (20 Books)

Want to be the ULTIMATE Canadian reader? Then complete ALL the challenges! (86 books)
Throughout the year I’ve been adding new books to my Canadian reading list (which you can view HERE), though I’ve been focusing more on authors and provinces, instead of awards or genres. Obviously I’m going to go for the Ultimate Canadian reader BUT the main goal for me this upcoming year is to just read more Canada! And I want YOU to read more Canada, too!

This will be a super informal challenge, I’ll write check in posts here and there, so keep track of your Canadian reads so you can share your progress! The challenge will run from January 1st to December 31st.

2015 New Author Challenge

Challenge Summary:

Here are the guidelines:

  1. The challenge will run from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015.
  2. Since this is an author challenge, there is no restriction on choosing your novels. They can definitely be from other challenges. However, the authors must be new to you and, preferably from novels. Anthologies are a great way to try someone new, but only a third of your new authors can be from short stories/novellas or anthologies.
  3. I want this to be an easy challenge, so you can pick to do either 15, 25 or 50 new authors. It all depends on how fast you read and how adventurous you want to be.  If you reach your goal halfway through the year, don’t stop. Any new author you try can be added to Mr. Linky. We all want to know about your new experience.
  4. After reading your new author, write your review and then come back here and add your link to Mr. Linky. Make sure you include your name and the author, but adding the title is completely up to you.
  5. Bloggers or Non-Bloggers alike are welcome. You don’t have to have a site to participate. You can link up via Facebook, GoodReads or even Amazon if you’d like.

*Once you choose your challenge level, you are locked in for at least that many books. If you find that you're on a mountain-climbing roll and want to tackle a taller mountain, then you are certainly welcome to upgrade.  All books counted for lower mountains may carry over towards the new peak.

*Challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2015.

*You may sign up anytime from now until November 4th, 2015.

*Books must be owned by you prior to January 1, 2015. No ARCs (none), no library books. No rereads. [To clarify--based on a question raised last year--the intention is to reduce the stack of books that you have bought for yourself or received as presents {birthday, Christmas, "just because," etc.}. Audiobooks and E-books may count if they are yours and they are one of your primary sources of backlogged books.]

*You may count any "currently reading" book that you begin prior to January 1--provided that you had 50% or more of the book left to finish in 2014.  I will trust you all on that.

*Books may be used to count for other challenges as well.

*Feel free to submit your list in advance (as incentive to really get those books taken care of) or to tally them as you climb.

*There will be quarterly check-ins and prize drawings!

*A blog and reviews are not necessary to participate. If you have a blog, then please post a challenge sign up and link THAT post (not your home page) into the linky below. Non-bloggers, please leave a comment declaring your challenge level--OR, if you are a member of Goodreads, I will once again put together a group for the challenge there. Feel free to sign up HERE.  At the beginning of the year, I will once again have a sidebar link for called Mount TBR Review Headquarters for 2015 reviews and progress updates.

2.) You can read any novel, short story or author just so that the genre is mystery/crime/thriller.

As an incentive each month’s link-up post (including this sign-up link-up post) will be followed by another link-up post that will be a giveaway of a mystery/crime/thriller from my own bookshelf, just a note that these are used books but I would never give away something not up to par so even though it is used it is still in good condition.

2015 Category Challenge

Challenge Summary:
The idea is to read books from different categories, to chat about what you read, and to inflict bookbullets on your fellow challengers. You can have as many or few categories as you wish, they can cover any sort of topic, and you can read as many books as you want in each category.

When this group was started, the idea was for everyone to pick (their own!) 8 categories of books and read 8 books in each of those categories in 2008. In 2009, it was to read 9 books each in 9 different categories, 10 in 10 in 2010, 11 in 11 in 2011, etc. Once we got into the higher years/numbers, it started to get difficult to get that many books read in a year, but since we still liked our category reading (it helps with reading out of the box), we changed it to a category challenge, so that everyone could pick whichever number of categories they wished and, of course, whichever number of books to read in each category. That's a short version of how this recurring group came to be and you are very welcome to join with us - just set up a thread, name your categories, and chat away!

The challenge officially begins on January 1, 2015, but starting early or late is welcomed.

Have fun!!
